Disaster drills on commuter railroads,
Amtrak or subways, along with buses, are
incredibly important, not just for the
practice, but to see what works and doesn't
work out of a whole collection of protocols.
And, it is crucial that as many area fre and
ambulance departments (these are
sometimes separate agencies) are involved
as possible, since these FD and EMS
workers will be the ones doing rescue and
treatment for victims. One needs to include
any department that might have to respond
to an incident. On Long Island, where I live,
units all over both counties (and possibly
Brooklyn and Queens as well) on the island
might respond, along with PD and county-
based responders.
The volunteer ambulance corps I
dispatch for recently held a MCI (Mass
Casualty Incident) drill involving a school
shooting. For our fairly small drill we had
units from all over Sufolk County. Post drill
analysis showed us ways we could improve
and streamline our response. I'd like to see
a lot more train and bus related drills.
Recently posted galleries include photos of the Southern California-based
Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, or ARTIC, in various stages
of construction. To see additional images from the project, as well as completed
project renderings, go to metro-magazine.com/photogallery/list.aspx.
