Additionally, frst re- sponders face new risks. Alternative fuel fres like ethanol can also, to some extent, be more challenging to extin- guish. Ethanol is a water-miscible fuel and requires the use of alcohol-resis- tant foam concentrates — other foams are destroyed very quickly. Gentle ap- plication of the foam is also very impor- tant, see Figure 6. Some countries have been using al- ternative fuels for more than 20 years, others are just beginning. O ne hin- drance to the introduction of alterna- tive fuels is the perception that they may result in explosions and increased risk. Dissemination of present knowl- edge and development of new data is key to the wide-scale introduction of al- ternative fuels. ACTIVE TEST AREA SP, in cooperation with Chalmers University, has recently opened one of Europe's largest test and research facil- ities for Active Safety – ASTA ZERO (Ac- tive Safety Test Area AB). ASTA ZERO is a state-of-the-art test facility specifcal- ly designed for developments in active trafc safety and includes unique envi- ronments to build any scenario to de- velop, test or certify new traffic safety solutions; making it possible to test lit- erally all aspects of active safety in one place. More information about the are- na can be found at http://www.astaz- ero.com/. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Responsibility to ensure safe travel on buses should be shared by all par- ties. Establishing standards and best practices will ultimately mean less leg- islation, or at least legislation that is backed by sound scientifc knowledge and best practices. Very little data exists to specifically identify the quantity, type and cause of bus fres. In addition, the limited legislation, standards and best practices that are in place aren't al- ways readily available. In the near fu- tu re, l i n k s t o k n ow n o rga n i z at i o n s, committees and other sources of infor- mat i o n w i l l b e pu b l i s h e d o n t h e SP w e b s i t e a l o n g w i t h c o n f e re n c e s i n which fire safety is on the agenda. We will continue to expand the envelope of knowledge in support of bus and coach safety through research, testing and certifcation.
