Fare hikes proposed to ofset fuel costs June 2005 – Several public transit agencies around the U.S. began pro- posing fare hikes to ofset skyrocket- ing fuel costs. In Southern California for instance, Metrolink was set to ask its board for an increase between 4.5% and 9.25%, while Wis.-based Madison Metro looked to raise its fares by 10%. METRO releases frst ever paratransit survey Aug. 2004 – Begun as a one-page survey with 60 respondents, the in- augural paratransit survey found that providers' biggest challenge was on- time service (32%). Meanwhile, nearly 60% of respondents said they planned on purchasing vehicles because rider- ship was growing rapidly. L.A. Metro receives frst BRT vehicle Nov./Dec. 2004 – North American Bus Industries delivered the frst of L.A. Metro's 200 "futuristic-looking" 60-foot articulated BRT vehicles for its Met- ro Orange Line. Te CNG-powered ve- hicles went into revenue service when the line launched in August 2005. Calif. agency unveils frst hydrogen- electric bus Feb./March 2005 - Te Tousand Palms, Calif.-based SunLine Tran- sit Agency became the frst U.S. pub- lic transit agency to place a hydro- gen-electric hybrid bus into revenue service. Te vehicle operated on an electric drive system with a hydrogen- fueled Ford V-10 internal-combustion engine. SAFETEA-LU bill signed Sept./Oct. 2005 – After a dozen deadline extensions, President George W. Bush signed the $286.4 billion SAFETEA-LU transportation authori- zation bill. Hurricane Katrina cripples transit Sept./Oct. 2005 – Several public transit agencies, including the New Or- leans Regional Transit Authority, were crippled after Hurricane Katrina laid waste to huge swaths of land from New Orleans to Biloxi, Miss., as well as parts of Alabama and Florida. Early reports estimated the cost of the damage as high as $26 billion. APTA EXPO goes to Dallas Nov./Dec. 2005 – Despite an omi- nous weather forecast following Hur- ricane Rita, an estimated 15,000 jour- neyed to Dallas, including more than 1,000 international attendees from 60 countries.
